The black silhouettes of the ancient oaks reach skyward in the cold winter's night as if seeking sustenance from the cosmos. The vision is made possible by the electrification of civilization as evidenced by the rebound of city lights from the hovering clouds to the glistening, crystalline snow which carpets the ground where only a few weeks previously, green grass was caressed by multicolored leaves blown over its residence.
The branching visual evokes a physical representation of the splitting of my heart. Arteries. capillaries and tertiaries branch ever tinier in their focus on delivery of nutrients and oxygen while simultaneously scavenging carbon and pollutants, the core of their sustenance.
Winter is akin to sleep, elusive at times. The planet needs to rest, and we have over-stimulated her in a consistent manner, like an addict who cannot contain his cravings, to the extent that the vessel, my body or earth (if you will), is failing.
It is time that we wake up and comprehend the necessity of relaxation, the declining of consumption, the replenishment of life. Let us as an organism sleep the deepness of the ocean so that refreshment and vigor are paramount. Break the yoke of the lizards, cold-blooded destroyers as they are, and revel in the repose of the night so that we can welcome the sun once again in joyous abandon.
Life is contrasts. Pleasure-Pain. Dark-Light. Sweet-Sour. Female-Male. Adult-Child. Soft-Hard. Close-Far. Fear-Security. Without the differences, all is muted. Embrace the extremes and come to center in balance.
