The Wood Element

Email this Article

In Feng Shui, one of the principals is the principal of the five elements.  These elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.  If these elements exist in a production cycle, then the energy in your environment is working for you.  The productive cycle, going clockwise, starts with Wood.  Wood feeds Fire, Fire is reduced to Earth, Earth creates Metal, Metal contains Water and Water feeds Wood.

Each element has Colors, Shapes, Materials, Seasons, Time of Day, plus more associated with it.  This means that any of these items can be used to introduce that element into your environment.

This month we will talk about the element Wood or Mu, the Pioneer.  Wood begins the productive cycle.  Wood represents growth, spring and plant life.  Spring is the season for Wood.  Wood energy is expansive, nurturing and versatile.  In the YIN form it is supple and pliable, in the YANG form, Wood is strong and can take a lot of strain.  It has roots that go deep into the ground providing stability.

The primary color of Wood is Green; secondary colors are Blue or Brown.  The directions are East and Southeast.  It controls the Liver and gallbladder.  Gemstones associated with Wood element are Emerald, Jade, and Green Opal. The planet is Jupiter.

Shapes for Wood are vertical, tall items, rectangular in nature.  Obviously anything made of wood could be used to represent the Wood element.  Don't forget wood products such as paper can be used as well.  Even landscape pictures; rectangular of course, could be used.

Flowers are a symbol of the Wood element.  Flowers placed in the east will improve family relationships and help create prosperity.  Flowers in the south will improve you fame and good name.

Fruits can also be used to introduce Wood into the environment.  Oranges symbolize wealth, happiness and abundance; your southeast area is prosperity, how about a picture, rectangular, of course, of oranges in the southeast.  Peaches can be used in your marriage sector, southwest.

Scents to use include Peppermint, Yarrow, Rosemary; secondary scents are Lavender, Patchouli, and Rose.

In Flying Star Feng Shui, your individual element would be calculated.  A Wood Person, when balanced, are public spirited and energetic.  They are generous and romantic.  They are also very creative, idea people.  They have outgoing personalities.

If a Wood person is not balanced, they can be angry, impatient, careless and frustrated.  An unbalanced Wood person might have back pain, irritability, indecision, weakness or paralysis of the limbs and eye problems. Too much wood creates a feeling of being overwhelmed or over committed creating feelings of anger, impatience, frustration, hastiness, and carelessness.  If you find yourself shouting, this is a characteristic of being imbalanced.

Wood people should choose creative vocations such as writing, painting, photography, music and interior design.  Architects and Landscape Design are other possibilities.  You could show your creativity by choosing careers in computers. Wood people support computers, which are the Fire element.

You can find out if you are a Wood Person at the next Rochester Holistic Festival to be held on May 19th, 2007 at the American Legion Hall in downtown Rochester, MI.  For Vendor opportunities or more information, contact Laurie Sagal at (248) 852.2292.
