What Is Your Carbon Footprint?

Imagine a world where everyone breathes easier. One with less carbon emissions. Not worrying about global warming. Do you know your carbon footprint? What is the impact of your everyday living on the carbon content of our atmosphere? Is not knowing putting us all at risk?

Your Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. If you knew, I mean really knew the impact that you have on the amount of greenhouse gases you are producing, it would be a step in the right direction. Now you can pinpoint (notice) the activities that negatively impact the environment and choose a different action to change the impact. You can calculate your carbon footprint at: http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.html

It's really about education. Educating yourself about the choices you make. And evaluating the impact of your choices. Did you know that the carbon output, based on the annual average electrical consumption of a home using fossil fuels is about the same as the twenty-four automobiles?

I have looked at solar energy as a way to reduce my carbon footprint. The average system would cost about $40,000 to install. And the systems are complex. The average person, including myself, does not have the know-how to put it together. Nor does the average person have that kind of money laying around for something as invisible as electricity. Probably the biggest reason that solar energy has not come into wide-spread use.

Another alternative is wind-power. System cost is still pretty high. The complexity is still there. The added noise will make it hard to get the right permits.

With solar energy you can take advantage of something called net-metering. Most states have laws that support this. The way it works is the excess electrical energy your system produces goes out into the electrical grid. It basically spins your electrical meter in reverse. At night when your solar energy system is not producing any electricity it starts to feed back into your house. If your system is designed properly, you will owe nothing to the electric company. Or maybe you'll even be lucky enough to get a check from the utility. This is still a complex solution.

I've recently come across a company that will rent you the system and maintain it for you. They first evaluate your electrical consumption based upon your past electrical bills. Then they design a system that works for you. They base your rent on what the system produces at your current electrical rates. They will even lock in this rate for up to 25 years. Remember when few people could afford cell phones? Then they decided to give them away if you signed up for their program. Where would cell phones be today if everybody had to purchase their own tower?

Imagine reducing your carbon footprint by twenty-four internal combustion powered cars. An affordable alternative to fossil fuels putting the power to change into the hands of individuals like you and myself. This could be the grass-roots movement that you have been waiting for. I'm already involved. What about you? You can Make a difference!
